The new Mazda CX-5 is heading to South Africa, and the local arm of the Japanese automaker has revealed the expected launch date for Mzansi. Here’s what you can expect…
Expected to make local landfall in 2026, the all-new Mazda CX-5 aims to build on what made its predecessor such a popular midsize SUV: sharp exterior styling, solid interior build quality, capacious cabin, overall comfort, and more.
When it was introduced in 2016, the second generation of the Japanese automaker’s best-selling SUV was a significant step up from the first iteration, which made its international debut four years earlier, in 2012. So, whereas the latter car’s lifecycle spanned four years, its second-generation successor has been around for nine. It did get a nip and tuck in 2021, though. Yet, that’s still quite a long time. But as the age-old adage goes: “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.”

However, considering the advancements made in the ever-competitive midsize-SUV segment, the outgoing CX-5, though remaining a commendable family car, arguably started to feel a touch outdated when compared to its long-time rivals, such as the new Volkswagen Tiguan, which we’ve driven in April 2025, Kia Sportage, Hyundai Tucson, Honda CR-V, and Toyota RAV4, to name but a few established competitors.
The third-generation CX-5, when it finally arrives in Mzansi in the second half of next year, aims to win back market share from not only the aforementioned family SUVs, but also from other rivals, such as the Haval H6.

The box-fresh CX-5’s sculpted bodywork retains its forebear’s profile, though is longer (up 115 mm) and wider (up 15 mm). The third generation measures 4 690 mm long, front to rear, and 1 860 mm in width. It also stands taller than the second generation, at 1 695 mm (up 20 mm). And the increase in all-around exterior dimensions will likely translate to an even more capacious cabin than before.
So, stepping inside, the new model features an array of upgraded technologies. The latter includes a 10.25-inch digital driver’s display and, depending on the level of specification, either a 12.3- or 15.6-inch, touch-enabled infotainment system, a Bose surround sound audio system, ambient lighting, and a panoramic sunroof.
Locally, the CX-5 will be powered by a 2.5-litre, four-cylinder naturally aspirated petrol engine, with a mild-hybrid unit joining the range later on.
