I’ve said it before: I’m not a Mini girl. Nothing against them, they just haven’t ever been my thing. I drive a Fiat 500X, so naturally I’m drawn to retro looks and a little quirky charm.
But hand me the keys to a performance Mini? That “not a Mini girl” mindset disappears. Give me the latest John Cooper Works (JCW) and, well…consider me converted.

Franschhoek and fast lanes
Testing it around school runs or shopping centre carparks? No chance. We needed space. So we headed to Franschhoek for the Bastille Festival, taking the JCW over the Franschhoek Pass both ways.
Result? Pure fun. Every bend, every straight, every shift had me grinning. It’s the kind of drive that makes you forget traffic lights exist and start looking for corners to lean into.

Quick, punchy, and playful
The JCW is quick. Alive. I’d just been in a Porsche 911 Carrera and jumping into the JCW didn’t feel like a downgrade. I’m not comparing the two, it’s obvious they’re worlds apart, but this little thing punches way above its weight.
There is 170 kW and 380 Nm under the bonnet with sharp steering and a quick-shifting dual-clutch gearbox that’s snappy enough to make you feel like the car is showing off. Every corner feels precise.

Handling that impresses
Yes, people love “go-kart-like handling.” But let’s be real: the only go-karts I’ve driven were poorly maintained, skiddy little birthday- or team-building specials. They had little to no grip and would slide around like they were on ice. It’s not exactly a reliable benchmark.
The JCW, though, is a different beast. Tight, responsive, perfectly tuned. It almost feels like it’s reading your mind. It’s handling that rewards confidence, without ever feeling scary or twitchy.
The numbers
0–100 km/h in 6.1 seconds. Top speed 250 km/h. Done.
Price? Around R735 500 for the base price. It’s way out of my budget, sure. Its closest competitor, the Gold GTI, is over R100 000 more for a similar adrenaline fix. Styling, practicality, and personality differ, but thrill-per-kilometre is similar.
Who should drive this
This car is for JCW fans, thrill-seekers, or anyone who wants a daily drive with a little spark. And perhaps those aspiring to a GTI, but your budget doesn’t quite stretch that far. If you can afford the JCW, take it for a test drive. I’m almost certain that you will walk away (or to the vehicle finance section) with a smile.
