Updated Mercedes-AMG G63 in SA: Pricing, specs and more

The updated Mercedes-AMG G63 has landed in South Africa, with the local arm of the Three-pointed Star brand releasing pricing and spec for the apex G-Wagon. Here’s what you need to know. See pricing below…

As a reminder, the pinnacle G-Wagon employs the Affalterbach-based automaker’s familiar 4.0-litre twin-turbocharged V8. The petrol motor produces a healthy 430 kW and 850 N.m of twisting force, the latter of which is on tap as soon as the rev needle edges the 2 500 r/min mark. Power is sent to all four corners via the marque’s AMG Speedshift TCT 9G transmission.

However, for the updated G63, Mercedes-AMG the V8 unit has been handed some mild electrification in the shape of 48 V technology. Thanks to the mild-hybrid tech and integrated starter generator, an additional 15 kW and 200 N.m of torque are available for short durations, thus lifting peak power and twisting force to 445 kW and 1 050 N.m.

As standard, these figures allow the 2.6-tonne performance SUV to sprint to the three-figure marker from a standstill in an impressive-for-a-vehicle-of-its-size 4.4 seconds (claimed), before topping out at an electronically governed 220 km/h. However, specifying the optional AMG Performance Package shaves one-tenth of a second off the original 0-100 km/h sprint time and lifts maximum speed to 240 km/h.

In addition to the improved performance, ticking the AMG Performance Package box on the options list adds AMG Active Ride Control suspension, which features active, hydraulic roll stabilisation and adaptive, adjustable damping, to the revised G63 package. This setup, which can be specified individually, is also included with the optional Offroad Package Pro.

The Offroad Package Pro includes two additional off-road driving modes: ‘AMG Traction Pro’, which generates optimal traction in ‘Rock’ and ‘Sand’ driving programmes, and ‘AMG Active Balance Control’, which adjusts roll stiffness depending on the road surface and driving situation. ‘AMG Active Balance Control’ features a trio of different settings: ‘Low’, ‘Mid’ and ‘High’.
