Tarmac-shredding (600 kW/1 420 N.m) Mercedes-AMG GT 63 S E Performance blasts into SA

Boasting 600 kW and a tarmac-shredding 1 420 N.m, the Mercedes-AMG GT 63 S E Performance has blasted onto South African shores. See pricing below…

The Mercedes-AMG GT 63 S E Performance, exclusively available in coupé body style, is, as its ‘E Performance’ badging would suggest, employs a plug-in hybrid powertrain, which comprises the Affalterbach-based brand’s 450 kW/850 N.m 4.0-litre twin-turbocharged V8 combined with an electric motor that adds 150 kW and 320 N.m of torque to the petrol-electric setup’s total system output…of 600 kW and an eye-widening 1 420 N.m of twisting force, channelled to the road via the German marque’s 4Matic+ all-wheel-drive system as soon as the rev needles edges the 2 500 r/min marker.

Billed as the quickest accelerating Mercedes-AMG to date, the (2 120 kg) GT 63 S E Performance sprints to the three-figure marker from a standstill in just 2.8 seconds, the company claims, before topping out at 320 km/h…were you fortunate enough to have access to an autobahn or closed-off stretch of tarmac.

Ensuring the GT 63 S E Performance remains glued to the ground when travelling at speed, some aerodynamic wizardry comes into play. The tarmac-shredding coupé features several active aero elements, which contribute to creating a ‘Venturi’ effect to keep the car grounded, and an extendable rear spoiler with five angular positions. The ride height lowers by 40 mm when reaching 80 km/h.

The GT 63 S E Performance’s permanently excited synchronous electric motor is coupled with a “high-performance” 6.1 kWh battery pack. According to the company, the lithium-ion unit offers an electric-only operating range of 13 km on a single, full charge.  An onboard 3.7 kW charger forms part of the 400 V electrical architecture.
