The Mercedes-AMG SL 63 has blasted onto South African shores. Here’s how much you can expect to pay for this barnstorming drop-top.
Spearheading Mercedes-AMG’s local SL model line-up — the (600 kW/1 420 N.m) SL 63 S E Performance model has yet to be confirmed for our shores) — the SL 63 is now available in South Africa. See pricing below…
The SL 63 employs the Affalterbach automaker’s familiar 4.0-litre twin-turbocharged V8, endowed with a healthy 430 kW and 800 N.m of twisting force, the latter on tap as soon as the rev needle edges the 2 500 r/min marker…and up to 4 500 r/min. Power and torque are sent to the firm’s 4Matic+ all-wheel-drive system via Mercedes-AMG’s nine-speed AMG Speedshift MCT transmission. AMG Active Ride Control and rear-wheel steering are included with the SL 63 package as standard. The SL 63 is fitted with a set of AMG alloy wheels as standard. The 20-inch items are shod in mixed-size, 265/40 front and 295/35 rear rubber.

According to the company, the SL 63’s outputs allow the 1 895 kg drop-top to sprint to the three-figure marker from a standstill in “only” 3.6 seconds, before topping out at maximum speed of 315 km/h. Speaking of time and speed, the brand says it takes about 15 seconds for the ‘Z-fold’ convertible fabric roof to open and close, at speeds of up to 60 km/h.
Stepping inside, the SL 63 features such items as a digital driver’s display, sited for an AMG multifunction steering wheel, and a portrait-oriented touchscreen for infotainment. The latter, 11.9-inch item incorporates Apple CarPlay and Android Auto screen mirroring. Dual-zone climate control and heating functionality for the front seats are included as standard.
