Ushering in a new era for the E-Class, the Mercedes-AMG E 53 Hybrid aims to “redefine” the performance-focused executive performance saloon segment. The E 53 Hybrid’s plug-in hybrid (PHEV) arrangement comprises a 330 kW/560 N.m 3.0-litre turbocharged inline-six and a 120 kW/480 N.m permanently synchronous electric motor. The petrol-electric setup produces a combined system output of 430 N.m and 750 N.m of torque, the latter available in a broad 2 200 r/min to 5 500 r/min swathe of the rev band.
The E 53 Hybrid combines mighty performance with efficiency
According to the Affalterbach-based brand, these figures allow the (2 315 kg) E 53 Hybrid to dispatch the obligatory 0-100 km/h dash in only 4.0 seconds, before reaching an electronically governed 250 km/h top speed. However, it is worth noting that, when specifying the optional AMG Dynamic Plus package, which includes Race Start (the latter lifting power to 450 kW for optimal straight-line acceleration), the E 53 Hybrid completes the 0-100 km/h sprint in 3.8 seconds…and tops out at 280 km/h.
However, the E 53 Hybrid is not only aimed towards delivering impressive levels of performance… Thanks to the PHEV powertrain, it is fuel efficient, too. Sited within the AMG Speedshift 9G transmission, the 21.2 kWh (net) lithium-ion battery pack allows for a claimed electric-only driving range of “over” 100 km, contributing to its impressive average fuel consumption of 1.0 L/100 km when the battery is replenished. It is worth noting that, when the latter item is discharged, the fuel economy increases to around 9.2 L/100 km — still impressive for a car with these levels of performance. The E 53 Hybrid can travel on electric power alone at speeds of up to 140 km/h.
