A head-turning off-roader: a GWM Tank review by Kelly Fisher
I liked the GWM Tank before I even got behind the wheel, purely based on its striking looks and commanding presence. There’s no denying that this proper off-road vehicle from the Chinese manufacturer turns heads wherever it goes. With its boxy silhouette and retro-inspired design, it rather resembles an oversized toy car come to life. But what’s it like to drive? I climbed into the driver’s seat to find out.

A nostalgic nod to off-road icons
The Tank’s exterior design is a bold statement that draws inspiration from classic off-roaders like the Jeep Wrangler, Ford Bronco, and Toyota FJ Cruiser. Its flared wheel arches, upright stance, and chunky proportions exude a rugged charm that’s both nostalgic and modern. The front grille, adorned with a Transformers-esque ‘Tank’ insignia, further adds to its distinctive character.

Full LED lighting front and rear, an off-road-biased front bumper with integrated fog lamps, and a rear bumper with a built-in tow bar complete the utilitarian look. All models roll on 18-inch diamond-cut wheels in black, shod with Michelin tyres for optimal on- and off-road performance.
Power and efficiency
Under the bonnet, the Tank 300 offers two engine choices: A 2.0-litre turbo petrol with 162 kW and 380 Nm of torque, and a claimed average fuel consumption of 9.5 L/100 km; and a 2.0-litre Hybrid that combines a turbocharged petrol engine with hybrid technology. This latter powerplant delivers impressive outputs of 255 kW and 648 Nm and GWM claims an average fuel consumption of 8.4 L/100 km.

Both engines are paired with a 9-speed DCT transmission, delivering power to all four wheels through a full-time four-wheel drive system.
A tech-laden Interior
Step inside the Tank 300, and you’re greeted by a luxurious cabin that belies its rugged exterior. The interior is swathed in full leather, with embroidered seat designs in perforated leather adding a touch of sophistication. Ambient lighting illuminates the brushed chrome trim and air vents, creating a premium atmosphere.

The centrepiece of the dashboard is a 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system, which incorporates Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity, dual-zone climate control, vehicle settings and drive modes and navigation.
A clever split-screen function allows users to drag information between the infotainment display and the driver’s instrument cluster, enhancing usability.

Other notable features include multiple USB-A and USB-C ports, 12V and 220V power outlets, 60/40 split rear seats and 400-litre boot capacity (expandable with seats folded).
Safety hasn’t been overlooked, with the Tank 300 boasting a 5-star ANCAP safety rating, a comprehensive suite of driver assistance systems, and seven airbags.
On-road comfort, off-road capability
On the road, the Tank 300 proves to be a surprisingly refined and comfortable cruiser. The cabin is well-insulated, and the suspension strikes a good balance between comfort and control. The hybrid powertrain provides ample grunt for overtaking, though fuel consumption may be higher than expected, especially during off-road excursions.

With 224 mm of ground clearance, impressive approach and departure angles, and a wading depth of 700 mm, it’s ready to tackle serious off-road challenges. The electronically controlled rear differential and specialised ‘Crawl’ cruise control further enhance its capabilities in rough terrain. Verdict: A compelling package with character
The GWM Tank 300 is an intriguing addition to the off-road SUV segment. It combines head-turning looks, a luxurious and tech-filled interior, and genuine off-road prowess in a package that’s hard to ignore. While fuel consumption may be a concern for some, the Tank’s overall charm and capabilities make it a compelling option for those seeking a unique and capable 4×4.
Prices start at R725,950 for the 2.0T Super Luxury, rising to R851,950 for the range-topping hybrid model. Given its feature set and performance, the GWM Tank 300 represents good value in its class and is sure to win over many fans with its blend of retro charm and modern technology.
