The Chery Tiggo 4: A rising star in South Africa’s compact crossover market by Kelly Fisher
Since its 2021 debut, the Chery Tiggo 4 has become familiar on South African roads. Our recent Tiggo 4 Pro DCT test drive revealed why this compact crossover has captured the public’s attention.

This model’s heart is a 1.5-litre turbo petrol engine paired with a new DCT gearbox. While the manufacturer claims a fuel consumption of 6.7 litres/100km, real-world testing suggests this figure may be optimistic. The driving experience is generally smooth, with the gearbox performing admirably. However, when initially accelerating, there’s a slight jumpiness—a quirk that owners will likely adapt to quickly.
Aesthetically, the Tiggo 4’s popularity speaks to its broad appeal. While the large grille’s diamond pattern may not be to everyone’s taste, the overall design is inoffensive. It manages to carve out its own identity without resorting to the blatant copy–and-paste sometimes seen in Chinese vehicles.

Step inside, and a modern, stylish cabin greets you. Contemporary tech features, including a 15W wireless charging pad, touch-screen climate controls, and an improved infotainment system with wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, complement dark materials. Optional upgrades include leather seats, ambient lighting, a digital instrument cluster, cruise control, auto headlights, and keyless entry/start.
Family-friendly features abound, with 340 litres of boot space and a comprehensive safety package. This includes ABS, six airbags, hill start assist, traction and stability control, and hill descent control.
Priced at R415,000, the Tiggo 4 Pro DCT is less budget-friendly than some might expect from a Chinese brand. However, it comes well-equipped and includes an impressive warranty package:
– A 5-year/150,000km vehicle warranty
– A 10-year/1-million km engine warranty (for the first owner only)
– A 5-year/60,000km service plan
This pricing competes with established models like the Renault Duster, Suzuki Grand Vitara, and Toyota Corolla Cross. While it’s challenging to recommend the Tiggo 4 over these proven contenders, Chery’s sales figures suggest they don’t need the endorsement. The brand sold over 1,000 units in a single month earlier this year, likely driven by sales of lower-priced variants.

Although it may not be everyone’s first choice, the Chery Tiggo 4’s appeal is undeniable. It offers substantial value for its price point, making it a worthy contender for those in the market for a well-equipped compact crossover. If you’re shopping in this segment, the Tiggo 4 deserves a spot on your consideration list.
