You’ve read the headline right — the 8.5-generation Volkswagen Golf GTI has officially arrived in Mzansi. Yup, it’s finally here, folks. And we’re excited! Not only does the updated version of the eighth-generation Golf GTI sport a revised interior, the German automaker has also handed it an injection of power. But we will get to the former and latter, along with what else is new on the 8.5-generation Golf GTI, in a few.
Having made its local debut at the 2025 South African Festival of Motoring, which was held at Kyalami Grand Prix Circuit in Gauteng, a year after its international unveiling, the 8.5-generation Golf GTI joins its 1.4 TSI siblings in Volkswagen Group Africa’s local product portfolio. As such, the pre-facelifted Golf R is the only eighth-generation Golf still available in Mzansi. But we’re keeping our fingers crossed the updated version of Volkswagen’s apex hot hatch makes it way to our shores. But back to the 8.5-generation Golf GTI…

So, what’s new? Well, before we get to the interior and aforementioned boost in power output, let’s take a look at the exterior. Although the 8.5 generation looks seemingly similar to the eighth generation (read our launch review of the latter here), the Golf GTI now sports “newly developed” LED Plus headlamps and an illuminated VW emblem, while the rear LED lamps feature fresh LED daytime-running lights. Viewed from the side, the narrow badges found below the A-pillars have been ditched in favour of ‘GTI’ lettering. GTI-specific, 19-inch Queenstown alloy wheels are also present.
The most notable interior revision comes in the shape of a larger infotainment display. The touch-enabled, 12.9-inch unit features Apple CarPlay and Android Auto screen mirroring. The sports seats are upholstered in Vienna leather, replete with red contrast stitching. A panoramic sunroof is included as standard.
Now, onto the engine. The 8.5-generation Golf GTI employs an uprated version of the firm’s EA888 powertrain. While torque remains the same (370 N.m), peak power output has been increased by 15 kW. The result: 195 kW delivered to the road via the front axle. According to Volkswagen, this allows for a 0-100 km/h sprint time of 5.9 seconds and a top speed of 250 km/h.
So, how much does the 8.5-generation Golf GTI cost in Mzansi? In short, R908 000. Only 300 examples will be available this year.
