Toyota South Africa Motors (TSAM) has announced the introduction of a five-speed manual transmission to its Land Cruiser 79 single-cab and Land Cruiser 76 Station Wagon models boasting the automaker’s 2.8 GD-6 engine option. See pricing below…
As a reminder, the Land Cruiser 79 single- and double-cab model ranges are available with the choice of four engine options: Toyota’s 170 kW/360 N.m 4.0-litre, naturally aspirated V6 petrol powertrain; 96 kW/285 N.m 4.2-litre, naturally aspirated inline-six diesel engine; 151 kW/430 N.m 4.5-litre turbocharged V8 oil-burner, and, since the update, 2.8-litre, four-cylinder turbodiesel, the sole engine option available with an automatic transmission.
Equipped with a six-speed self-shifter, the latter unit produces 150 kW and 500 N.m. The newly introduced five-speed manual model churns out the same amount of power; however, its torque output is 450 N.m. It is worth noting, however, that, currently, the manual-equipped 2.8 GD-6 is only available in single-cab guise.
In the Land Cruiser 76, however, the 2.8 GD-6 is now available with the five-speed manual cog swapper, in addition to a six-speed automatic. This model is, of course, also available in 4.2-litre inline-six diesel guise.

Just like the single-cab Land Cruiser 79, the difference in pricing between the six-speed automatic 2.8 GD-6 variant and five-speed manual 2.8 GD-6 derivative is the same, with the latter priced R30 100 less than the entry-level 2.8 GD-6 automatic-equipped Land Cruiser 79.
