New (619 kW/1 085 N.m!) Ford Mustang GT-based Shelby Super Snake heading to SA

The most powerful Shelby-tuned Ford Mustang to ever don the ‘Super Snake’ badge, Ford South Africa has announced that, come 2025, a Super Snake conversion kit will be available for the seventh-generation Mustang GT on local shores. Yup, you read that right — those wanting to elevate their new Mustang GT to boast “supercar-levels” of performance will be offered the opportunity to do just that. It comes at a premium, though…

But before we get to what exactly this conversion kit entails, let’s take a closer look at the sports car it is based on, the S650 Mustang GT. As a reminder, the latest iteration of Ford’s iconic muscle car employs the carmaker’s Coyote powertrain; the 5.0-litre, naturally aspirated V8 petrol engine producing 328 kW and 540 N.m of torque, which, in the South African model, are exclusively sent to the rear axle via the firm’s familiar 10-speed automatic transmission. Now, on to the Shelby Super Snake…

We designed the Shelby Super Snake to be the pinnacle of our performance cars based on Ford’s world-class Mustang sports car — Joe Conway, CEO of Shelby American

The ‘Super Snake’ conversion ups the ante. The conversion includes the fitment of a “high-performance” Whipple supercharger; updated performance components, which include Shelby’s ‘Extreme Cooling’ system, revised performance half shafts and a Borla exhaust system, which has been optimised for improved airflow; and upgraded brake rotors, which are sited behind 20-inch forged magnesium wheels that are wrapped in Shelby performance-spec rubber. The suspension has also been redesigned to offer improved handling. However, the big news is arguably the power and torque produced by the Shelby Super Snake…

Thanks to the enhanced performance components and, of course, the engine gaining breathing apparatus, the petrol motor produces a jaw-dropping 619 kW! That’s a staggering 291 kW more than the car it is based on. However, if that wasn’t enough to make you gasp, consider the Shelby Super Snake’s available torque output — 1 085 N.m, a whopping 545 N.m more than the standard Mustang GT.

How much will the Shelby Super Snake cost in South Africa?

Converting your Ford Mustang GT into a Shelby Super Snake will set you back R3 640 000, which includes the price of the donor car (R1.3 million).

“We designed the Shelby Super Snake to be the pinnacle of our performance cars based on Ford’s world-class Mustang sports car,” said Joe Conway, CEO of Shelby American. “It follows Carroll Shelby’s vision that each generation of car improves the breed. By collaborating with Ford Motor Company, Whipple, and other top companies, our Las Vegas team created our best Shelby Super Snake yet.”
