The updated Toyota Land Cruiser 70 Series range has landed in South Africa. So, without further ado, let’s dive into the highlights of what you can expect from the updated model line-up.

Thoroughly revised, the Land Cruiser 70 Series now benefits an even wider range of customers in search of a tough and capable 4×4, Vice President of Marketing at Toyota South Africa Motors (TSAM), Glenn Crompton, says.
How so, you ask? Well, whereas the Land Cruiser 70 Series was previously available with only six-cylinder petrol, V6 and V8 diesel powertrains, each coupled with five-speed manual gearboxes, the upgraded version can be had with the Japanese automaker’s 2.8-litre, four-cylinder, turbodiesel motor.
Yup, you read that right. You can now have the single- and double-cab and station wagon derivatives with the same 150 kW/500 Nm powertrain found under the bonnet of the Hilux, Fortuner and Land Cruiser Prado. What’s more, it is exclusively coupled with a six-speed automatic transmission.
But how much will seen models cost? Well, the 2.8-litre single cab and 2.8-litre double cab are priced at R917 100 and R1 009 000, respectively. Two 2.8-litre station wagons are available, with the standard model priced at a hair below the R1 million marker (R999 900, to be precise). The range-topping, 2.8-litre VX version’s price is yet to be confirmed.

However, if you do prefer swapping cogs yourself, you can still opt for the 96 kW/285 Nm 4.2-litre, naturally aspirated, inline-six oil-burner; 151 kW/430 Nm 4.5-litre, V8 turbodiesel; or the 170 kW/360 Nm 4.0-litre, V6 atmospheric petrol unit.
The single-cab variants equipped with the 4.0-litre, 4.2-litre and 4.5-litre engines are priced at R765 500, R829 000 and R956 200. The double-cab models with these powertrains will set you back R864 600 (4.0-litre), R920 800 (4.2-litre) and R1 039 200 (4.5-litre). Moving on to the 4.2- and 4.5-litre station wagons, these models are priced at R900 100 and R1 076 800, respectively.

As standard, all models ship with a three-year/100 000 km warranty. A service plan spanning 100 000 km is optional.
“The addition of a new powertrain will not only broaden the appeal of the 70 Series to a broader audience, but will also give our customers the power of choice between the torque-rich four-cylinder automatic and the tried-and-true manual V8 across all 70 Series body styles, providing a wide range of alternatives for buyers,” said Crompton.
