Representing a significant step for the local arm of the Chinese automaker, the J7 SHS will soon join Jaecoo South Africa’s J7 model line-up as the brand’s new flagship. Here’s what we know so far about the plug-in hybrid J7.
Scheduled to launch in Mzansi in June 2025, the J7 SHS (Super Hybrid System) will be the first new-energy Jaecoo available in South Africa…before the Chinese brand introduces a selection of other models, including battery-electric, to our shores, that is.
The J7 SHS employs a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) powertrain, which comprises a 105 kW/215 N.m 1.5-litre, four-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine and 150 kW/310 N.m permanent magnet synchronous electric motor. Combined, the PHEV arrangement produces a healthy peak power output of 255 kW and 525 N.m of torque. Power is exclusively delivered to the front axle via a single-speed direct hybrid transmission (DHT).

Jaecoo claims a combined average fuel consumption figure of 1.0 L/100 km. However, in the real-world environment, the company recorded a combined figure of around 4.8 L/100 km on a recent long-distance trip. Matching the latter figure allowing for an impressive petrol-electric range of over 1 200 km from the SUV’s 60-litre fuel tank. On a single, full charge, the company says the J7 SHS’s 18.3 kWh lithium-ion battery pack provides an electric-only driving range of up to 90 km.
Stepping inside, a large, portrait-oriented touchscreen infotainment system, replete with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto screen mirroring, takes centre stage. A digital driver’s display is also present.

Said Shannon Gahagan, National Brand and Marketing Manager for Omoda & Jaecoo South Africa, “The J7 SHS represents a significant step forward for the Jaecoo brand in South Africa. It brings together performance, efficiency and premium comfort in a way that meets the evolving needs of today’s drivers—whether they’re looking to reduce emissions, save on fuel, or simply enjoy the flexibility of an electrified drive.”
