GWM launches new base-spec P300 bakkie in SA

GWM South Africa has introduced a duo of new base-spec P300 double cabs to Mzansi. Here’s what you can expect…

The South African bakkie segment is booming. However, bakkies have become expensive. So, to offer consumers a more pocket-friendly offering, GWM has introduced a new entry-level specification to its local P300 model range.

“The P300 LS was developed for customers who refuse to compromise,” said Floyd Ramabulana, Head of Marketing at GWM South Africa. “It’s for those who want more power, more confidence and more style – all wrapped up in a package that’s very competitively priced.”

How much does the GWM P300 cost in South Africa?

With the inclusion of the new entry-level, LS variants the GWM P300 model range is now priced from R529 900 (for the 4×2 derivative), making the GWM an altogether more appealing product in South Africa’s ever-competitive bakkie segment. Noteworthy, both the aforementioned LS model and LS derivative equipped with a four-wheel drivetrain cost R70 000 less than the LT 4×2 and 4×2. A seven-year/200 000 km warranty and a service plan spanning the same duration or 75 000 km are included as standard across the range.

But just what niceties does the base, LS package include? Well, although available at a more palatable price point, the list of standard items is comprehensive, with this level of specification including such items as LED headlamps, fog lamps with cornering function, roof rails, fixed side steps, an electronically locking load bay gate, and “eye-catching” 18-inch alloy wheels.

The interior plays host to a 7.0-inch digital instrument cluster, a 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone mirroring, a wireless smartphone charging bay, a six-speaker sound system, a reverse-view camera setup, and a leather-trimmed multifunction steering wheel.

“The new P300 LS proves that you don’t have to sacrifice comfort or tech to get serious strength,” added Ramabulana.

The LS models are equipped with the same 2.4-litre, four-cylinder turbocharged oil-burner and nine-speed automatic transmission as their LT and LTD siblings. As a reminder, this engine produces 135 kW and 480 N.m of torque.
