Volvo Cars has announced it will soon release its first-ever extended-range plug-in hybrid vehicle (PHEV). Positioned between the XC60 and XC90 in the automaker’s product portfolio, meet the XC70. Detailed specification remains scarce, however, with Volvo Cars saying more details will be released in the coming months. However, here’s what we know so far about the upcoming premium midsize Volvo SUV…

[The XC70] enables us to maintain a balanced product portfolio, while offering a highly attractive alternative to customers who are not yet ready for EVs — Håkan Samuelsson, President and Chief Executive of Volvo Cars

Underpinned by the Swedish automaker’s new scalable modular architecture (SMA) — a platform specially designed for extended-range PHEVs — the upcoming XC70 is touted as Volvo Cars’ longest-range PHEV to date. Indeed, the Gothenburg-based brand claims an all-electric operating range of “up to” 200 km. And that’s impressive.

Said Volvo Cars, “With its extended electric range and fast charging capabilities, the XC70 lets you handle most daily travel without tailpipe emissions and at a lower cost, while the efficient combustion engine provides freedom and flexibility for longer trips.

“This means you could travel longer distances without worrying about charging or refuelling. Combined with its versatility that offers space and comfort for all passengers, the XC70 is a car for every type of journey.”

Said Håkan Samuelsson, President and Chief Executive of Volvo Cars, “The XC70 marks our strategic entry into the extended-range plug-in hybrid segment, a perfect bridge to full electrification. It enables us to maintain and develop a balanced product portfolio, while offering a highly attractive alternative to customers who are not yet ready for fully electric cars.”

Though the XC70 was designed to meet the demand for longer-range PHEVs in China, where it will be introduced later in 2025, Volvo Cars is “exploring” the XC70’s potential for other markets.
