Volkswagen has officially revealed the ID. Polo GTI. We detail the performance-focused all-electric Polo…
Earlier in 2026, Volkswagen officially unveiled the ID.-badged Polo — the first all-electric version of the German automaker’s popular hatchback. As a reminder, the ID. Polo employs a single, front-mounted electric motor that can be had in three states of tune: 85 kW, 99 kW, and 155 kW — the former two models equipped with a 37 kWh lithium-ion battery pack, which offers a claimed operating range of up to 329 km. The most powerful of the trio features a larger, 52 kWh nickel-manganese-cobalt (NMC) item, which provides up to 454 km (claimed) of range on a single, full charge. However, now, the Wolfsburg brand has revealed an even more powerful variant…and it comes in the shape of the ID. Polo GTI.
Similar to its non-GTI siblings, the ID. Polo GTI features front-mounted single electric-motor setup, here coupled with the largest battery pack available. The ID. Polo GTI is endowed with 166 kW and 290 N.m of torque — good for a claimed 0-100 km/h sprint time of 6.8 seconds and a top speed of 175 km/h.

So, how does the emissions-free Polo GTI compare to its internal combustion engine (ICE) sibling? (As a reminder, the ICE model is exclusively built at Volkswagen’s Kariega-based assembly plant in Mzansi.) Well, although the ID. Polo GTI delivers 19 kW more power to the road via its front wheels, it is less torquey, with the ICE variant producing 320 N.m of twisting force. Tipping the scales at a claimed 1 247 kg, the ICE Polo GTI is also, albeit slightly, quicker than its all-electric (1 540 kg, claimed) sibling to the three-figure marker from a standstill — 6.7 seconds (claimed)…before topping out at 238 km/h.
The ID. Polo GTI offers a claimed operating range of 424 km on a single, full charge. So, slightly less than the “standard” ID. Polo producing 155 kW. Volkswagen says a 10 to 80 per cent charge takes around 20 minutes at a DC fast-charging facility.
The interior of the ID. Polo GTI features such items as 10.25-inch digital instrumentation, replete with configurable graphics, including a layout resembling the Mk1 Golf’s, and a central infotainment screen measuring 12.9 inches.
