What powers the Volkswagen Golf 8.5 in South Africa?
Locally, the updated eighth-generation Volkswagen Golf will be exclusively powered by the Wolfsburg-based brand’s familiar 1.4-litre, four-cylinder turbocharged petrol powertrain. As a reminder, the 1.4 TSI unit, which is also employed by select Tiguan models, produces 110 kW and 250 N.m of torque, the full complement of which on tap from a mere 1 500 r/min to 4 000 r/min. Power is sent to the front axle via an eight-speed automatic transmission.
But what about the updated Golf GTI and Golf R, we hear you ask. Will the Mk8.5 Golf GTI and Golf R join the soon-to-arrive entry-level derivative in the German marque’s local Golf product portfolio? Well, no … or not yet, at least. Owing to South Africa’s fuel quality, these models currently remain unconfirmed for Mzansi.
However, the Mk8 iterations of the performance-focused Golf models will still be available. As a reminder, the Mk8 Golf GTI and Golf R’s 2.0-litre, four-cylinder turbo-petrol engines produce 180 kW/370 N.m and 235 kW/400 N.m, respectively.

The Volkswagen Golf 8.5 will be available with the choice of four trim grades, Life, Life+, R-Line and R-Line+. Standard items include 10-inch digital instrumentation and 12.9-inch touchscreen infotainment, which incorporates wireless Apple CarPlay/Android Auto screen mirroring. A first for a Golf, R-Line+ spec, among its additional equipment, features an illuminated Volkswagen emblem at the front.
How much does the Volkswagen Golf 8.5 cost in South Africa?
The Golf 8.5 1.4 TSI model line-up is priced from R580 900 for the Life derivative to R688 100 for the R-Line+ variant. A five-year/90 000 km service plan and a warranty spanning three years or 120 000 km are included as standard.
