Currently, the refreshed T-Cross line-up comprises a trio of variants , with three more penned in to join the local line-up in due time. The latter includes a duo of derivatives — the entry-level (T-Cross) and Life — employing a 70 kW version of Volkswagen’s 1.0-litre, three-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine, and a base-spec 85 kW model. So, while we wait for these models to arrive in Mzansi, let’s take a closer look at the first units available here…

Available exclusively with the 1.0-litre turbo-triple in 85 kW/200 N.m state of tune and the Volkswagen Group’s seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox, which transfers power and torque to the front axle from 5 000 r/min and 2 000 r/min, respectively, the three models on offer can be had in Life, Style, and R-Line (pictured here) levels of specification. But before we get to the standard equipment, let’s continue with engine spec. The 1.0-litre petrol unit, Volkswagen claims, sips, on average 5.6 L/100 (in the dual-clutch gearbox-equipped derivatives). The 0-100 km/h sprint time and top speed are rated at 10.2 seconds and 193 km/h. Now, on to the standard equipment…
As standard, Life trim grade includes LED head- and taillamp clusters (noteworthy, base-spec models now also feature LED units, as opposed to the previous halogen items), 16-inch ‘Nottingham’ alloy wheels, electrically folding exterior side mirrors, replete with projection lighting, and black roof rails. Inside, the Life is equipped with an 8.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system and digital instrument cluster of the same size, wireless smartphone charging, cruise control, and park distance control.
The Style variant ditches the entry-level and Life derivatives’ LED fore and aft lighting array for Volkswagen’s IQ. Matrix LED units, which incorporate ‘Dynamic Light Assist’, an illuminated light strip spanning the grille, 17-inch ‘Manila’ alloy wheels, and chrome-finished roof rails. The interior upgrades to a 10-inch digital instrument binnacle, dual-zone climate control, and sports seats.
The flagship, R-Line derivative sits on a set of 17-inch ‘Valencia’ alloy wheels. In addition to the front illuminated light strip included with Style level of specification, the R-Line gains a light strip at the rear. Adding to this model’s sporty persona, the cabin features stainless steel pedals.
