Omoda South Africa has expanded its popular C5 model lineup with the local introduction of the C5 SHS (Super Hybrid System). The first “conventional” hybrid electric vehicle (HEV) — that’s to say not plug-in hybrid (PHEV) — from the Omoda & Jaecoo stable, the internal combustion (ICE) component of the C5 SHS’s petrol-electric powertrain comes in the shape of a 1.5-litre, four-cylinder turbocharged engine. The ICE is supplemented by an electric motor that’s paired with a 1.83 kWh lithium-iron phosphate battery pack.
According to the Chery sub-brand, the C5 SHS sips a combined 4.9 L/100 km, which, when matching the Chinese automaker’s claim, translates to a driving range of over 1 000 km from a single, full 51-litre tank of fuel.
Okay, so the claimed fuel consumption and driving range are impressive, but how much power and torque does the C5 SHS’s hybrid arrangement produce? Well, 165 kW and 295 N.m. Omoda claims these figures allow for a 0-100 km/h sprint time of 7.9 seconds. The top speed is rated at 175 km/h.
Similar to its C5 siblings, the C5 SHS is equipped with disc brakes at all four corners, with the front items ventilated. The front suspension is of the McPherson strut variety, while the rear is multilink. The C5 SHS is fitted with a set of 18-inch alloy wheels, wrapped in 215/55-size tyres.
How much does the Omoda C5 SHS cost in South Africa?
The Omoda C5 SHS is priced from R469 900. Included with the pricing as standard are a five-year/75 000 km service plan and a vehicle warranty spanning the same duration or 150 000 km. In addition, first owners benefit from an engine warranty of 10 years or one million km.
