It’s here, folks — Kia’s first-ever bakkie, the Tasman, has finally arrived in Mzansi. Here’s how much you can expect to pay for the Tasman on local shores…
The long-awaited Kia Tasman has officially (and finally) launched in South Africa, with the South Korean automaker’s entry into the ever-competitive local bakkie segment priced from a hair below R680 000 (see full pricing below).
Employed across the model range is Kia’s familiar 2.2-litre SmartStream turbocharged diesel engine, tuned to produce 154 kW and 440 N.m of torque — the former and latter available from 3 800 r/min and 1 750 r/min, respectively — in this application. The four-cylinder oil-burner is exclusively coupled with an eight-speed automatic transmission. The Tasman is available with the choice of 4×2 and four-wheel-drive (4WD) drivetrains. Kia claims average fuel consumption figures of 7.5 L/100 km and 7.8 L/100 km for the 4×2 and 4WD models, respectively. The Tasman is fitted with an 80-litre fuel tank.
The Tasman measures 5 410 mm in length and 1 930 mm in width. The wheelbase spans 3 270 mm. The range-topping, X-Pro derivative sports a ground clearance of 252 mm, and 32.2- and 26.2-degree approach and departure angles, respectively. All models sport a water-fording depth of 800 mm. The Tasman has braked and unbraked towing capacities of 3 500 kg and 750 kg, respectively. The 4×2 and 4WD models offer payload capacities of 1 123 kg and 1 008 kg, respectively.
How much does the Kia Tasman cost in South Africa?
Available in LX (4×2) and 4WD SX and X-Pro levels of specification, the Tasman is priced from R679 995 (LX) to R999 995 (X-Pro). The mid-tier, SX derivative is priced from R789 995. Kia also offers “Colour Coded” models, where key exterior elements, including the wheel arches, are finished in the same hue as the body. This adds around R5 000 to the standard asking price. Included with the pricing as standard are a five-year/unlimited km warranty and a service plan spanning six years or 90 000 km.
