Toyota South Africa has released pricing and specs for its highly anticipated new, sixth-generation RAV4 line-up, which is scheduled to launch in Mzansi soon. We detail the box-fresh local model range…
Locally, the initial new Toyota RAV4 model line-up will comprise four derivatives, available with the choice of three trim grades and two powertrain options — the latter including internal combustion engine-only (ICE) and traditional hybrid (HEV). However, from what we understand (by way of Toyota South Africa’s online RAV4 brochure), a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) variant is set to join the range in the future. The trio of specifications levels include GX, VX and, a first for the RAV4, the Japanese automaker’s GR-Sport (GR-S) spec — the latter featuring not only GR-S-specific exterior and interior design elements, but also mechanical enhancements such as revised steering and suspension.

Exclusively available in VX spec, the ICE-only new RAV4, which is priced from R799 900, employs a 2.0-litre naturally aspirated four-cylinder petrol engine, which produces 127 kW and 203 N.m of torque — the former and latter available from 6 600 r/min and 4 400 r/min, respectively. Power is exclusively delivered to the front wheels via a continuously variable transmission (CVT). According to Toyota, the sole non-electrified model in the range sips, on average, 6.3 L/100 km. Matching the firm’s claim translates to a driving range of over 870 km on a single, full 55-litre tank of fuel.
The rest of the initial model range (so, that’s excluding the PHEV) employs an HEV powertrain. The self-charging petrol-electric setup produces combined power and torque outputs of 176 kW and 221 N.m. Power is delivered to the road via Toyota’s E-Four all-wheel drivetrain. The GX- and VX-spec HEV derivatives have a claimed fuel consumption figure of 4.5 L/100 km, while the GR-S returns a claimed 4.7 L/100 km. Similar to the ICE-only new RAV4, all HEV models are equipped with a 55-litre fuel tank. As such, the HEV GX and VX, and GR-S offer driving ranges of 1 222 km and 1 170 km, respectively.
