The Mercedes-Benz G580 with EQ Technology (to use its full name) has launched in South Africa. Here’s everything you need to know, including pricing and specifications, about the all-electric G-Class…
The Mercedes-AMG G580 is equipped with a quartet of (108 kW) electric motors, which, operating individually from one another, drive each wheel, respectively. Integrated into the emissions-free off-road SUV’s ladder-frame chassis — two in each axle housing, fore and aft — the quad electric-motor configuration produces a combined peak power output of 432 kW. However, as impressive as the latter figure is, it is the total amount of torque produced by the G580 that is jaw-dropping — a whopping 1 164 N.m!
According to the Three-pointed Star brand, these figures allow the G580 to dispatch the 0-100 km/h dash in 4.7 seconds, making it three-tenths of a second slower to the one-tonne marker than the recently launched revised G63. Though not as quick as the petrol-powered AMG model, considering it tips the scales at just over three tones (around 400 kg more than the G63), the G580’s 0-100 km/h is impressive nonetheless. The G580’s top speed is rated at 180 km/h.
The G580 features a 116 kWh battery pack, which allows for a claimed (WLTP) operating range of “up to” 473 km on a single full charge. Mercedes-Benz says a 10 to 80 per cent charge takes “around” 32 minutes (at a 200 kW DC fast charging station).
Noteworthy, the G580 introduces “unique” driving functions for off-road environments. These include ‘G-Turn’ and ‘G-Steering’, the former of which allows the vehicle to do a tank turn (watch it below!).
How much does the Mercedes-Benz G580 with EQ Technology cost in South Africa?
At launch, the Mercedes-Benz G580 with EQ Technology will be available in two flavours: the standard (if there is such a thing) derivative and the Edition One. The former and latter models are priced from R3 823 457 and R4 647 456, respectively. Included in the sticker price are a five-year/100 000 km maintenance plan and two-year/unlimited km warranty.
