The INEOS Grenadier is undoubtedly one of the 4x4s that – since Sir Jim Ratcliffe, CEO of INEOS Group Limited, conceived the idea of a “stripped-back, no-nonsense, utilitarian” off-roader over a pint of beer at the London-based pub the SUV is named for – has garnered immense attention from 4×4 enthusiasts, globally and locally, here in South Africa. In 2022, following extensive testing, the series-production model was finally unveiled. Subsequently, the Grenadier Quartermaster, a double-cab bakkie version of the Grenadier, and the Fusilier, an all-electric 4×4 SUV, were revealed.

In addition, the UK company expanded its operations to introduce its Arcane Works division, a division with which the manufacturer aims to offer customers more personalised, limited-edition INEOS vehicles, the first of which has now been introduced. This model comes in the shape of the Grenadier Detour. Only 200 examples will be made.
“For our first launch, Grenadier Detour felt like a fitting name as the Grenadier is for people who enjoy driving, and sometimes it’s worth taking the longer route,” said George Ratcliffe, Commercial Director of INEOS Automotive.

So, what sets this special edition apart from the standard Grenadier? Well, for starters, the Detour derivatives are distinguished by their model-specific 18-inch alloy wheels and “specially designed” front grille. The Detour is also available with four “dedicated” exterior paint finishes. The latter includes Magma Red, Whiteout Blue, Squall Green, and Storm Force Silver. The interior offers a host of personalisation options, coming in the shape of several trim finishes and materials, and more.
As a reminder, the Grenadier is available with the choice of two BMW-sourced engine options, a 3.0-litre, six-cylinder turbocharged petrol and a 3.0-litre turbocharged oil-burner with the same number of cylinders. The former powertrain produces 210 kW and 450 N.m of torque, while the latter, diesel unit churns out 183 kW and 550 N.m, available from a mere 1 250 r/min. Both drivetrains feature ZF eight-speed automatic cog swappers.
