The MG3’s powertrain line-up comprises a non-electrified 1.5-litre normally aspirated internal combustion engine (ICE) and a 1.5-litre unit which also goes without forced induction but incorporates electric assistance. The ICE-only, 1 495 cc motor produces 81 kW and 142 N.m of torque. A five-speed manual and continuously variable transmission (CVT) is available. MG claims an average fuel consumption of 6.0 L/100 km. Matching the automaker’s claim allows for a driving range of 750 km on a single, full 45-litre tank of fuel.
The hybrid setup’s 1 498 cc ICE produces 75 kW and 128 N.m. However, with the assistance of the electric motor, which is coupled with a 1.83 kWh battery, these figures are lifted to a healthy 155 kW and 425 N.m of twisting force, allowing for a claimed 0-100 km/h sprint time of eight seconds. According to the company, the most powerful model in the range sips 4.3 L/100 km on average. Although the petrol-electric version’s fuel tank capacity is nine litres less than the ICE-only models’, thanks to its hybrid setup’s fuel economy, matching MG’s claim results in a driving range of over 830 km.
A duo of trim grades are available, Comfort and Luxury. Standard equipment include a 7.0-inch digital driver’s display, 10.25-inch, touch-enabled infotainment system, which is Apple CarPlay- and Android Auto-enabled, and rear park distance sensors, to name but a few items. Comfort models also feature a reverse-view camera, while Luxury spec upgrades to a 360-degree item.

The local MG3 model line-up comprises a quartet of derivatives — three ICE-only models and a hybrid variant. The trio of non-electrified versions is priced from R269 900 to R344 900, while the single petrol-electric model will set you back R469 900. As standard, the pricing includes a seven-year/200 000 km warranty and a service plan spanning three-years or 45 000 km.
