JMC has returned to South Africa, with the Chinese automaker’s initial bakkie portfolio comprising a trio of Vigus models.
Distributed by Salvador Caetano Auto South Africa, subsidiary of Salvador Caetano Group, JMC (Jiangling Motors Corporation) has officially relaunched its South African operations, with the Chinese automaker aiming to “reshape” South Africa’s commercial vehicle landscape; starting with its three-strong Vigus bakkie portfolio.

The JMC Vigus is available in single- and double-cab body styles. Powering the single cab is a 2.4-litre, four-cylinder turbocharged diesel engine, exclusively coupled with a five-speed manual gearbox. The 2.4-litre unit churns out 103 kW and 310 N.m of torque, delivered to the road via the rear wheels. The firm claims an average fuel consumption of 8.0 L/100 km, which translates to a driving range of 800 km from a full 64-litre tank of fuel.
The double cab can be had with the choice of 4×2 and 4×4 drivetrains, exclusively paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission. Sited below the double-cab models’ bonnets is a 2.0-litre, four-cylinder turbocharged oil-burner, which produces 104 kW and 350 N.m. JMC claims an average fuel consumption of 7.7 L/100 km and 8.2 L/100 km for the 4×2 and 4×4 variants, respectively. Equipped with a 64-litre fuel tank, the former and latter offers driving ranges of 831 km and 781 km, respectively.
How much does the JMC Vigus cost in South Africa?
Touted as the most affordable bakkie in South Africa, the three-strong JMC Vigus model line-up is priced from a hair below R300 000 for the single-cab variants. Rounding out the range, the 4×2 and 4×4 double-cab derivatives are priced from R439 900 and R499 900, respectively. Pricing includes a five-year/100 000 km warranty. A three-year/50 000 km service plan is available as an option.
