The fresh-faced Haval H6 has launched in Mzansi, with the updated third generation sporting stylish new cosmetic enhancements, upgraded interior tech and, noteworthy, an injection of power, while a plug-in hybrid powertrain has been introduced to the H6 GT.
The facelifted third-generation line-up can be had with the choice of two powertrains: a 2.0-litre, four-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine and a 1.5-litre, four-cylinder turbocharged petrol-electric unit. Sounds familiar? It is — it’s the same powertrains employed by the pre-facelifted H6 range.
However, the non-electrified engine option has been handed an injection of power and torque, to now produce 170 kW and 380 N.m, signifying increases of 20 kW and 60 N.m. Models employing the 2.0-litre four-pot can be had with front- or all-wheel drive, and is exclusively equipped with a nine-speed dual-clutch transmission. Haval claims average fuel consumption figures of 7.4 L/100 km and 8.3 L/100 km for the FWD and all-paw models, respectively.
The HEV (hybrid electric vehicle) derivative has, however, not received a boost in power, with its 113 kW/233 N.m 1.5-litre internal combustion engine (ICE) and 139 kW/300 N.m electric motor producing a combined system output of 179 kW and 530 N.m. Power is exclusively sent to the front axle via the Chinese automaker’s “intelligent” dedicated hybrid transmission (DHT). This variant has a claimed average fuel consumption of 5.2 L/100 km.

Spearheading the model range, the H6 GT now employs a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) powertrain, which, pairing a 110 kW/230 N.m 1.5-litre ICE with two electric motors, produces a healthy 321 kW and 762 N.m of twisting force for a claimed 0-100 km/h sprint time of 4.9 seconds. Noteworthy, the company says the PHEV setup allows for an all-electric driving range of 180 km when the sportily styled H6’s 35.4 kWh battery pack is replenished and a combined, petrol-electric range of 1 000 km.
The new H6 is a bold step forward — not only for our local range but for the GWM brand as a whole
From an exterior point of view, the third-generation H6 features a redesigned grille; new, vertical daytime-running light clusters; and an updated taillamp array. The most notable revision made to the interior is the introduction of a larger, 14.6-inch touchscreen infotainment system.
