Chery reveals SA-bound KP31 bakkie

Internally known as the KP31, Chery has whipped the wraps off its upcoming new double-cab bakkie, with the Chinese automaker’s local arm confirming this future-focused model will make its way to Mzansi.

The KP31 (as it is internally known) double-cab bakkie is based on Chery’s Kaitan ladder-frame underpinnings, which has been engineered to support internal combustion-only and, indeed, new-energy powertrains — the latter including plug-in hybrid (PHEV) and battery-electric (BEV).

Billed as a segment-first, the KP31 was revealed with a diesel PHEV powertrain, paired with a transmission featuring a low range transfer case. The drivetrain will feature front, centre and rear locking differentials. Further elevating its off-road proviso, a selection of dedicated off-road driving modes and a tight-turn assist function, designed to improve manoeuvrability in demanding terrain, will be available.

However, this isn’t the only PHEV powertrain with which the KP31 will be available. Indeed, following the introduction of the former derivative, Chery will expand the range with the addition of a petrol PHEV unit in the future.

The Chinese automaker has yet to confirm power and torque outputs, along with how much electric-only operating range the diesel PHEV arrangement will offer. However, the firm has stated, “In line with segment expectations, the KP31 will target a payload of 1 000 kg and a braked towing capacity of 3 500 kg.” The Wuhu-based brand says the load bed has been designed to maximise usable space with minimal wheel arch intrusion and to support cab-chassis applications.

From what we understand, the series-production model will measure 5 450 mm in length and 1 920 mm in width, and stand 1 925 mm tall.

When will the Chery KP31 launch in South Africa?

The series-production model of the KP31 will be unveiled in due course, Chery says. The production model is scheduled to arrive in late 2026 or early 2027.

“The KP31 marks an important step in Chery’s global product expansion strategy. The pick-up segment is a core category in many markets, and this model has been developed to meet the high standards customers expect in terms of durability, versatility and capability,” said Verene Petersen, National Marketing Manager at Chery South Africa. “The introduction of a diesel plug-in hybrid powertrain reflects Chery’s ongoing commitment to advancing new-energy technologies across multiple vehicle segments. We look forward to sharing further details as we move closer to the model’s official launch.”
