BMW 530i M Sport engine and transmission
Sited below the BMW 530i M Sport’s sculpted bonnet is a 2.0-litre, four-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine, coupled with the automaker’s eight-speed Steptronic automatic cog swapper. Assisting the internal combustion unit is 48 V mild-hybrid tech. The four-pot further incorporates a starter generator on the belt drive to provide “particularly spontaneous” responses to throttle inputs when setting off and during intermediate sprints, and enhance driving comfort when using the car’s auto start/stop function.
The powertrain produces peak power and torque outputs of 190 kW and 400 N.m, the former and latter of which are available from 4 700 r/min to 6 500 r/min and from 1 600 r/min to 4 500 r/min, respectively. According to BMW, these figures allow the 530i M Sport to sprint to the three-figure marker from a standstill in 6.2 seconds. The top speed is rated at 250 km/h. The firm claims the petrol motor sips, on average, 7.0 L/100 km.
As a reminder, the 530i M Sport’s 520d internal combustion sibling’s 2.0-litre, four-cylinder turbocharged oil-burner, which is also equipped with an eight-speed self-shifter, churns out 145 kW and 400 N.m. The diesel-powered 5 Series’ full complement of torque is available from a lowly 1 500 r/min. BMW claims an average fuel consumption figure of 5.6 L/100 km for the 520d M Sport, a 0-100 km/h sprint time of 7.3 seconds and a maximum speed of 233 km/h.
