At the 2025 South African Festival of Motoring, Volkswagen Group Africa not only showcased the 8.5-generation Golf GTI… Indeed, along with the more powerful version of the German automaker’s pinnacle front-wheel-drive hot hatch – and several other models – the local arm of the Wolfsburg brand had the Tayron, which was officially launched in Mzansi earlier this week, on display.
So, what is the Tayron? Well, in essence, an upsized Tiguan. However, while it replaces the Tiguan Allspace in the company’s T SUV portfolio, it is a standalone model. Positioned between the new Tiguan and current-generation Touareg, the local Tayron line-up is available in five-seater and seven-seater configuration — the former reserved for the entry-level variant, while Life and R-Line trim grades feature the latter.

How much does the Volkswagen Tayron cost in South Africa?
The three-strong South African Tayron range is priced from R811 800 for the base (Tayron) derivative to R899 900 for the flagship, R-Line. The mid-spec, Life model will set you back R 853 800. As standard, the Tayron package includes a three-year/120 000 km warranty and service plan spanning five years or 90 000 km.
While the Tiguan can be had with the choice of 1.4 TSI, 2.0 TSI and 2.0 TDI powertrains, the Tayron is exclusively available with the 1.4-litre turbocharged petrol unit. Coupled with a seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox, the 1.4 TSI motor sends 110 kW and 250 N.m of torque to the front wheels. As a reminder, the 2.0 TSI and 2.0 TDI units available with its midsize sibling is paired with the brand’s 4Motion all-wheel drivetrain.

The Tayron’s interior layout is familiar to the new Tiguan’s. The cabin features a 12.3-inch, touch-enabled infotainment system, which incorporates Apple CarPlay and Android Auto screen mirroring, as standard across the range. Base spec includes such items as adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring and lane-keep assist functionality.
On top of the entry-level derivative’s standard equipment, Life level of specification gains a 10-colour ambient lighting array and tri-zone climate control. Sporting, ahem, a sportier front bumper design, R-Line grade includes 19-inch alloy wheels (as opposed to its siblings’ 18-inch items) and niceties such as heated front seats with massage functionality, and upgraded ambient lighting.
