Toyota Fortuner GR-Sport launches in SA: Pricing, specs & more

The highly anticipated Fortuner GR-Sport has touched down on South African shores, with Toyota South Africa Motors releasing pricing and specifications for the flagship — and most powerful — Fortuner. Here’s what you can expect…

The Fortuner GR-Sport is powered by the uprated, 165 kW/550 N.m version of the Japanese automaker’s tried-and-tested 2.8-litre, four-cylinder turbodiesel engine (as a reminder, the standard 2.8-litre oil-burner churns out 150 kW and 500 N.m). Power and torque are exclusively sent to all four corners via a six-speed automatic cog swapper, from 3 000 r/min and 1 600 r/min, respectively.

Toyota claims the most powerful model in the Fortuner line-up sips, on average, 8.4 L/100 km, making it 0.5 L/100 km and 0.8 L/100 km thirstier than the standard Fortuner GD-6 4×4 and (mild-hybrid) Fortuner GD-6 48V 4×4, respectively.

In addition to the boost in power and twisting force, the GR-Sport-badged Fortuner is distinguished from its standard stablemates via the fitment of several model-specific exterior and interior trim elements.

Starting with the former, the Fortuner GR-Sport features a revised front bumper, replete with reworked lower grille, “aggressive” spoiler and new fog lamp bezels. The rear diffuser has also been updated. Exclusively available in ‘Attitude Black’ and ‘Platinum Pearl White’ paint finishes, the Fortuner GR-Sport’s bodywork sits on a set of 18-inch GR alloy wheels.

Stepping inside, the Fortuner GR-Sport’s interior, though largely familiar to its stablemates’, features a variety of GR-Sport items. The latter includes leather-upholstered GR sports seats, replete with suede inserts, red contrast stitching and GR-branded headrests; a GR-branded engine start button; and aluminium sports pedals.

How much does the Toyota Fortuner GR-Sport cost in South Africa?

The Fortuner GR-Sport is priced from R999 000, making it R37 200 and R48 100 more expensive than the 2.8GD-6 48V 4×4 VX and 2.8GD-6 4×4 VX, respectively. As standard, the Fortuner package includes a warranty spanning three years or 100 000 km, and a nine services/90 000 km service plan.
