Tata has made its South African comeback in the passenger-car segment, with the Indian automaker relaunching its local passenger-car operations with the introduction of four new models, including the budget hatchback featured here – the Tiago. Here’s everything you need to know, including pricing and specs.
How much does the Tata Tiago cost in South Africa?
Priced from R184 900, at launch, the local Tiago line-up will comprise three derivatives: XM, which is exclusively available with a five speed manual gearbox, and XT, which can be had with either the latter cog-swapper or automated manual transmission (AMT). An XZ derivative, which will sit at the top of the model range, will be introduced at a later stage. As standard, the Tiago package includes a two-year/30 000 km service plan and a five-year/125 000 km warranty.

- Tata Tiago 1.2 XT MT – R209 900

So, what does each package include? Well, XM spec features such items as a 3.5-inch infotainment system, a digital driver’s display, and rear parking sensors as standard. XT level of specification upgrades to a multifunction steering wheel, a 7.0-inch, touch-enabled infotainment system, a four-speaker sound system, and a reverse-view camera. XT models also feature electronically stability control (ESC) and hill hold control. Driver and front passenger airbags are included as standard across the range. ABS with EBD is also present.
The upcoming XZ variant further upgrades to a 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system, which incorporates wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto screen mirroring, a new digital instrument cluster, automatic air conditioning, keyless start, HD reverse camera, LED headlamps, and 15-inch dual-tone alloy wheels.
The Tiago is exclusively available with the Indian automaker’s Revotron engine. The 1.2-litre, three-cylinder naturally aspirated petrol unit produces 63 kW and 113 N.m of torque, available from 6 000 r/min and 3 300 r/min, respectively. The firm claims an average fuel consumption of 5.0 L/100 km for both the five-speed manual and AMT models. Matching the carmaker’s claim allows for a driving range of 700 km from a single, 35-litre tank of fuel.
