Serving as the new flagship model in Suzuki South Africa’s compact-SUV portfolio, the Across has officially touched down on South African shores. Billed by the Japanese automaker’s local arm as the brand’s most advanced SUV yet, the Across “combines dashing good looks with class-leading technology and safety features, an efficient mild-hybrid petrol engine, and family friendly-friendly space and practicality”.
Not to be confused with the Across offered in Europe — the latter of which is based on the Toyota RAV4 — the Across offered locally is underpinned by the same platform as the Grand Vitara. Based on Suzuki’s Global C architecture, the latest compact SUV in the firm’s South African line-up measures 4 360 mm long, front to rear, 1 795 mm wide, and 1 655 mm tall. The Across’ wheelbase spans 2 600 mm.
Built in India, the Across offered locally is exclusively available with the carmaker’s K15C powertrain. Supplemented by the company’s 12 V SHVS tech, the 1.5-litre, four-cylinder naturally aspirated petrol engine produces 76 kW and 137 N.m of torque. The mild-hybrid unit can be had with either a five-speed manual gearbox or six-speed automatic transmission — the latter exclusive to the GLX-spec derivative. Suzuki claims an average fuel consumption of 5.3 L/100 km, which translates to a range of over 840 km on a single, 45-litre tank of fuel.
What does the Suzuki Across cost in South Africa?
Locally, the three-strong Suzuki Across model range is priced from R349 900 for the five-speed manual-equipped GL to R464 900 for the six-speed automatic GLX. Bookended by the former and latter derivatives, the six-speed automatic GL variant is priced from R372 900. As standard, pricing includes a four-year/60 000 km service plan and a warranty spanning five years or 200 000 km.
