First launched as a special-edition model offering increased value in 2016, the X-Rider namesake soon became a popular one in the South African market. In fact, it proved so popular that, in 2017, Isuzu SA decided to ditch its limited-edition status, and make this model a regular in its D-Max portfolio.. Now, the local arm of the Japanese carmaker has debuted an all-new iteration of the X-Rider-badged D-Max.

Manufactured at Isuzu’s Struandale production facility in Gqeberha (along with its other D-Max stablemates), this locally-built double-cab bakkie continues the recipe of its forebear. Based on the seventh-generation model, the D-Max X-Rider features several distinctive exterior design elements, such as a gloss black front grille, replete with model-specific red “Isuzu” lettering. “X-Rider” badges are, of course, also present, and located on the front doors and tailgate. A black Isuzu decal can also be found on the latter. In addition, the door handles, side-mirror housings, B-pillars and sports bar have received some black accents. The D-Max X-Rider rides on 18-inch diamond-cut alloys. LED lamps can be found both front, including the fog lamps, and rear.
So, what about the interior? To differentiate this variant’s cabin from its siblings, several red accents are present. This hue has been applied to the contrast stitching of the leather seats, with the latter’s headrests featuring “X” logos.

And the powertrain? The D-Max X-Rider is powered by Isuzu’s 1.9-litre four-cylinder turbodiesel. The common-rail, intercooled oil-burner produces 110 kW and 350 Nm of torque. Peak power and torque are available from 3 600 r/min and 1 800 r/min in the rev band. The D-Max X-Rider can be had with the choice of two drivetrains, 4×2 and 4×4. The former is available with a manual or automatic transmission, while the latter is only available with a self-shifter.
“The new D-MAX X-RIDER is all about image, style and capability, and is a great choice for discerning customers that want something special,” said Kevin Fouche, Department Executive of Product Planning and Programme Management at ISUZU Motors SA. “The X-RIDER will attract a lot of attention, but to offer value to our customer the new X-RIDER is based on the mid-range 1.9 Ddi LS models with a choice of manual and automatic transmissions in 4×2 form, and a 4×4 automatic for adventurous customers heading off the beaten track.”
