Mitsubishi Destinator coming to Mzansi in 2026

Set to bolster Mitsubishi South Africa’s SUV portfolio, the local arm of the Japanese automaker has confirmed when the Destinator will arrive in Mzansi.

Unveiled globally in 2025, the Mitsubishi Destinator has been engineered with emerging markets, including ours, in mind. Assembled at the Japanese marque’s Indonesia-based production plant, the same facility where the Xpander and Outlander Sport are built, the Destinator aims to offer exceptional quality and family-focused practicality at a palatable price point. Local specification and pricing will be announced closer to this model’s local introduction.

When will the Mitsubishi Destinator launch in Mzansi?

Mitsubishi South Africa has confirmed the Destinator will land in Mzansi in the first half of 2026, with an exclusive pre-launch campaign kicking off at the beginning of March, where the first 20 customers will be able to purchase this model at a special price, while unlocking a “substantial” mystery prize.

The soon-to-arrive seven-seater Mitsubishi SUV measures 4 680 mm in length, 1 840 mm in width, and 1 780 mm in height. The Destinator’s wheelbase spans 2 815 mm. The firm quotes a ground clearance of 214 mm.

The Destinator is powered by a 1.5-litre, four-cylinder petrol engine. The turbocharged unit produces a respectable 120 kW and 250 N.m of torque — the latter available from 2 000 r/min to 4 000 r/min. Power is exclusively delivered to the front wheels via a continuously variable transmission (CVT). Five driving modes will be on offer, each allowing the driver to tailor the drivetrain to their needs, whether for performance or fuel economy.

The Destinator will feature an array of nice-to-have items — the latter including an 8.0-inch digital driver’s display, a 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system, which relays music throughout the cabin via a Yamaha audio system, and 65-colour interior ambient lighting. A panoramic sunroof is also present.

“The Destinator is an all-new SUV designed for South African families and explorers alike. With its bold capabilities and versatile design, we are excited to help our customers embark on new journeys while strengthening our presence in the compact SUV segment,” said Lerato Nonyane, General Manager of Product and Marketing at Mitsubishi Motors South Africa.
