Driven: Ford Ranger Wildtrak 4×4 Supercab

Ford has something special for those who don’t need a five-seater.

When you hear “Wildtrak,” you imagine a well-appointed and stylish Ford Ranger, complete with a lifestyle full of bicycles and muddy dogs. You might envision road trips with the family and fun adventures. But then you see “Supercab,” and it’s hard to consolidate the two terms. Supercab refers to Ford’s ‘cab and a half’—a middle ground between a single and a double cab—without a second bench of seats or seat belts. Instead, it offers space for toolboxes and gear associated with construction work or outdoor activities.

For a duo, perhaps with a medium-sized dog, there’s still plenty of lifestyle to enjoy. I’m not trying to sell you on the Supercab, just highlighting its merits, especially in Wildtrak trim. Priced around R800k, our test 2.0L Bi-turbo featured a four-cylinder turbodiesel engine, delivering 154 kW and 500 Nm, paired with Ford’s ten-speed auto gearbox. It accelerates to 100 kph in 9.58 seconds and can achieve a respectable 7.5L/100km. However, I found it difficult to keep it under 8.8L/100km, largely due to climbing dusty dirt roads to scenic trails.

In this Wildtrak guise, it’s more than a workhorse, despite the white paint job. It came with a roller shutter for extra utility and security, useful for storing gear. The area behind the seats also sufficed. The cabin is a tactile pleasure, feeling premium and offering a great space from which to drive the Ranger. It features Ford’s massive infotainment screen, with most vehicle controls, while audio and aircon controls remain as analogue dials. It has multiple driving modes, such as Eco, and a 4×4 badge, making it capable of handling rough terrain. Our test car had 255/65 all-terrain tires, enhancing off-road comfort. You’ll want those too.

Overall, the Wildtrak Supercab was enjoyable. The caveat is it needs to fit into your life. As a father of three, it doesn’t make much sense for me, but I can appreciate its many use cases. What it does, it does with great aplomb. Highly recommended.
