Here’s why the Volvo EX30’s all-in approach means either fully embracing the electric dream or being left stranded.

The Volvo EX30 is more than just an electric vehicle – it’s a statement from the Scandinavian marque. Electrification is Volvo’s business, and this compact model is meant to stand on it. With no hybrid or combustion options, the XC30 is unapologetically electric. It has a fairly impressive range (for a compact EV) in addition to rapid charging capabilities – but you’ll still need to be all-in on the electric experience. And that’s ok.
The EX30’s design, too, is uncompromisingly modern, with clean lines and minimalist aesthetics that scream “future.” Inside, sustainable materials and clever tech reinforce the EV ethos. But it’s the driving experience that truly sells the EX30’s electric vision. Silent, seamless acceleration and precise handling make conventional driving feel super analogue, antiquated even.

The EX30 isn’t for the faint of heart or those hesitant to adapt. It’s for those ready to embrace the electric future, fully and unreservedly. And for those who do, the rewards are substantial – a driving experience that’s not just sustainable but sublime. But now, real talk. Once you get beyond the cool and contemporary aesthetic and neck-whipping acceleration that buries you into its comfy pews, there’s the tradeoff that comes with living with a low-range EV. Despite knowing where to find the fast chargers in the Cape, it only take one or two to be offline or inundated for range anxiety. On one particularly unlucky trip home, two of my go-to top up chargers were both in use and I was forced to either wait 90 minutes at a slow charger to get enough mileage to make it home, or simply hop into my son’s 1995 Peugeot 105 diesel instead and pick up the shiny Swede the next day. I went with the latter option, but can hardly mark against the Volvo, living the electric life is still tricky. And it wasn’t much better on a recent trip to Europe where I had a similar experience in an electric VW. So once again, as I feel compelled to do in every EV review – I’m going to reiterate that if you’re on the cusp of entering into a relationship with an electric vehicle, investing in a home charger is frankly a non negotiable. This foible aside, the EX30, despite being compact – feels about the perfect size for my needs. It’s a comfy family car that turns heads, puts a smile on its driver’s face and only then (finally) there’s the perks of EV ownership such as lower maintenance and the potential for more affordable (solar) fuel. So if you’re ready to take the plunge, are willing to make some minor adjustments to your way of life, Volvo has the car for you.
