Driven: 2025 Mini Cooper JCW

Hi, my name is Calvin and this is my rather personal take on the new John Cooper Works Mini. Let me begin. In 1994, at 16 years old I bought my first car. It was an original bullnose 1100 Mini Cooper and was my entry into a life of motoring. Fast forward five more years and I discovered the best motoring show… in the world. Top Gear had a huge impression on me, further nurturing my love for the motorcar and I became not only more deeply entrenched in this world, but it greatly endeared me to its hosts but would never in a million years imagine I’d one day be able to make a career out of living a similar lifestyle. Driving a wild array of machines in countless countries all over the globe. So imagine my luck having arrived in the Cotswolds, mere miles from Jeremy Clarkson’s farm to sample the new Mini Cooper JCW. Colour me lucky.

As I settled into the driver’s seat of the 2025 Mini Cooper JCW, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of excitement and nostalgia. The John Cooper Works badge has long been synonymous with Mini’s most athletic performances, and this latest iteration did not disappoint. With its sleek design and vibrant “Icy Sunshine Blue” hue, this three-door hatchback was ready to take on the winding roads between here and Oxford, birthplace of the four-wheeled icon itself. The cabin felt modern with a large AI-equipped infotainment screen and intuitive controls. The use of physical toggles for certain functions, such as gear selection and climate control, added a tactile element to the driving experience. The JCW logos scattered throughout the cabin served as a reminder of the car’s performance capabilities. One of my favorite features was the panoramic roof, which flooded the interior with sunlight and added to the overall sense of freedom and exhilaration. With 170kW and 380Nm at its disposal, the JCW was a force to be reckoned with on what the locals call B-roads. These are the more agricultural lanes that wind and undulate, providing a hell of a thrill even at the legal limits. The 0-100kph sprint took just 6.1 seconds, and would max out at 250kph. But it was on the tight bends that the JCW truly came alive. The direct feedback from the front wheels, the barking four-pot engine, and the JCW Sports Suspension all combined to create a driving experience that was both exhilarating and precise.

As I navigated the twisting tarmac, I found myself grinning from ear to ear. The JCW’s go-kart-like handling was both predictable and addictive, and the boost function on the left paddle shifter added an extra layer of excitement to the driving experience. The uprated JCW brakes provided confidence-inspiring stopping power, and the aerodynamics kept me pinned to the asphalt. But what truly impressed me was the JCW’s ability to balance performance with everyday usability. Despite its focus on speed and agility, the car remained remarkably composed and refined, even on the most mundane of drives. It’s a testament to Mini’s engineering prowess that the JCW can be both a thrilling driving experience and a practical daily driver.

As I drove through the picturesque towns and villages of the Cotswolds, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of pride and ‘pretend-ownership’. The Mini Cooper has always been a beloved brand, and the JCW badge is a badge of honor for enthusiasts around the world. And with the imminent release of the petrol-powered JCW, fans of the brand will have even more to look forward to. But what’s even more exciting is the news that Mini is venturing into the world of electric vehicles with an electric JCW model. While I couldn’t reveal too much about the electric JCW’s performance capabilities, I can say that it will boast 190kW and 350Nm, and will be available in both three-door and Aceman models. The electrification of the JCW lineup is a bold move, but one that I believe will pay dividends in terms of performance, efficiency, and environmental sustainability.

As someone who has a personal connection to the Mini brand – my first car was a classic 1100 Mini Cooper in British Racing Green – I was thrilled to see how the brand has evolved while still retaining its core values. The new JCW’s design, with its stocky and purposeful stance, is undeniably cute and plucky, just like its predecessor.
