VW Polo GTI Edition 20 revealed for SA

VW South Africa is commemorating 20 years of local Polo GTI production with the introduction of a new special-edition derivative, the Polo GTI Edition 20. Here’s all you need to know about the anniversary model.

The “GTI” nameplate is a staple in Mzansi, whether adorning the Golf or this model’s more compact sibling, the Polo. Locally built at Volkswagen’s Kariega assembly plant in the Eastern Cape province since 2006, this year marks the 20th anniversary of South African Polo GTI production. And with achieving such a milestone, a celebratory model is undoubtedly in order. Well, here it is — the Polo GTI Edition 20. Finished in Crystal Ice Blue metallic exterior paintwork, it looks good, doesn’t it?

In addition to the option of a new body hue (Ascot Grey and Kings Red metallic are also available), the Polo GTI Edition 20 gains several model-specific exterior elements, each signifying this model’s status as a special edition. This includes decals featuring the number “20” running along each side of the car, and a contrast black roof and side mirror housings. The anniversary edition VW Polo GTI is fitted with a set of 18-inch “Faro” alloy wheels, wrapped in 215/40-size tyres, fore and aft.

Stepping inside, the dashboard gains a “20 GTI” decal. “20 GTI” is also embroidered on the front floor mats, which feature red contrast stitching.

How much does the Volkswagen Polo GTI Edition 20 cost in SA?

Scheduled to launch in Mzansi in March 2026, the VW Polo GTI Edition 20 is priced from R605 700, making it R19 900 more expensive than the standard Polo GTI. Included with the pricing are a three-year/45 000 km service plan and a warranty spanning the same duration or 120 000 km.

Under the skin, the Polo GTI Edition 20 is mechanically untouched, with the 2.0-litre, four-cylinder turbocharged petrol unit retaining peak power and torque outputs of 147 kW and 320 N.m. The full complement of twisting force is delivered to the front axle, via a six-speed dual-clutch gearbox, from 1 500 r/min to 4 350 r/min.
