Toyota Hilux Legend 55 launches in Mzansi

The Toyota Hilux Legend 55 has arrived in Mzansi. Here’s how much you can expect to pay for Toyota’s latest celebratory Hilux.

Since its introduction to South Africa in 1969, the ‘Hilux’ moniker has become one of the most celebrated automobile nameplates in our market. So, over the years, Toyota South Africa Motors (TSAM) has commemorated the Hilux with the release of several commemorative models, starting with the Legend 35 in 2004 – the latter followed by the Legend 40 in 2010, Legend 45 in 2014, and Legend 50 in 2019. Now, the local arm of the Japanese automaker is celebrating the Hilux’s legacy one again; introducing the Legend 55 to Mzansi.

Commemorating 55 years of Hilux in our country, the Legend 55 model essentially replaces the “standard” Legend derivatives in the company’s local Xtra Cab and double-cab bakkie lineups – indeed, the Legend 55 is available in both the former and latter body styles – before the new, ninth-generation Hilux makes its official local debut. The Hilux 55 Legend will be available until 2026.

So, what does the Legend 55 package include as standard? Well, for starters, the interior features such items as 8.0-inch, touch-enabled infotainment, which incorporates Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and a nine-speaker JBL sound system. Branded chrome-finished scuff plates, “heavy-duty” rubber floor mats, and sports seats are also present, the latter featuring “Legend 55” embroidery on the headrests, front and rear.

Legend 55-specific exterior elements include exclusive badging, front bash plate, a lockable roller shutter for the rubberised load bed, Legend 55-branded styling bar, and a detachable tow bar. A neat touch, double-cab derivatives’ puddle lights also project “Legend 55”.

The exterior colour palette includes 10 colour options, which includes new Dark Green Mica Metallic and Sand Beige.

The Legend 55 is exclusively available with the automaker’s familiar 2.8-litre GD-6 powertrain and a six-speed automatic transmission. As a reminder, the 2.8-litre, four-cylinder turbocharged diesel engine produces 150 kW and 500 N.m of torque, the latter available from a low 1 600 r/min. The Xtra Cab and double-cab models are both available in 4×2 and 4×4 configuration.
