The Hilux is a staple in Toyota’s portfolio. Since its introduction, the Japanese marque’s midsize bakkie has gained, ahem, “legend” status. It’s no wonder this moniker — “Legend” — has been applied to the current-generation model. Now, the Aichi-based automaker is handing an injection of electrification to its popular pick-up, and has released more information on the Hilux Hybrid 48V.

So, what can we expect from this new variant? Of course, the most significant addition is, as its name would suggest, the incorporation of 48 V mild-hybrid technology. The 2.8-litre four-cylinder turbodiesel engine employed by this Hilux drives a compact motor generator by mans of a belt system, with the latter set-up charging the 48 V battery. In addition, the lithium-ion item also supplies the bakkie’s 12 V system through a new DC/DC converter.
As with several Toyota hybrids, the battery is charged during deceleration. In addition, the firm says the regenerative-braking set-up also enhances stopping performance.

But what about performance relating to power and torque? Well, once the battery is fully charged, the battery provides an additional 12 kW and 65 Nm of torque to the 150 kW/500 Nm oil-burner. According to the manufacturer, thanks to this, the Hilux Hybrid 48V provides improved acceleration.
However, it’s not only throttle response that’s been enhanced. The company claims this double-cab derivative is also more economical at the fuel pumps. Indeed, Toyota says it’s 5% more efficient than the non-hybrid Hilux. In addition, the carmaker says the drivability and ride has been improved, with the latter being quieter thanks to the hybrid system.

The Hilux Hybrid 48V is also the first Hilux to sport Toyota’s new Multi-Terrain Select system. This set-up features five pre-set driver settings. These are Dirst, Sand, Mud, Deep Snow, and Rock. So, although electrified, this Hilux stays true to its namesake’s off-road capability. The water-wading depth is rated at 700 mm. This has been achieved thanks to waterproofing the 48 V battery and DC/DC converter.
