The Porsche 911 is arguably the most iconic sports car to ever grace the road. Although much has changed since its introduction in 1964, the 911 is a product of evolution rather than revolution. Over the years, air cooling has made way for water cooling, breathing apparatus in the form of turbocharging has been introduced to most variants (bar the 911 GT3 models), and all-wheel drive is now available on several models. However, for the first time in the 911’s illustrious history, Porsche has now equipped hybrid technology to the 911.
Here are the highlights of the updated (992-generation) model line-up. Here’s what you can expect, including how much the revised range costs. But before we get to the latter (see pricing below), let’s take a closer look at the 992.2 Carrera GTS, the first of its namesake incorporating hybrid tech…
The GTS-badged 911 Carrera derivatives are now endowed with Porsche’s T-Hybrid set-up and are equipped with an electric exhaust gas turbocharged. The petrol-electric arrangement features a 3.6-litre horizontally-opposed six-cylinder, which is good for 357 kW and 570 N.m, an electric motor producing 40 kW and 150 N.m, and a 1.9 kWh, 400 V battery pack. Combined, the 911 Carrera GTS has a total power and torque output of 398 kW and 610 N.m. According to the German marque, thanks to the increase in power, the Carrera GTS completes the obligatory 0-100 km/h sprint time quicker than the previous model.
The opening gambit to the range, the (standard) Carrera models have retained the 3.0-litre turbocharged flat-six. However, for the updated model, Porsche has upgraded it with the fitment of the 911 Turbo’s intercooler and pre-updated Carrera GTS’s turbochargers. As a result, the Carrera now sports 290 kW and 450 N.m. The result is a 0-100 km/h sprint time of 4.1 seconds. However, specifying the Sport Chrono package shaves two-tenths of a second off the latter time.
