Porsche celebrates 50 years of 911 Turbo with special anniversary model

The Porsche 911 is arguably one of the most iconic sports cars to ever grace the road. The 911 is a testament to the German marque’s founder’s words, “Change is easy. Improvement is far more difficult.” Indeed, although the 911 model line-up has underwent several significant enhancements, such as the introduction of electrically assisted steering, turbocharging and all-wheel drive, throughout its 60-year history, the focus has always been on improving the rear-engined sports car than changing it. It’s the case of evolution instead of revolution.

Speaking of turbocharging, the 930-generation 911 Turbo, introduced in 1974, is arguably one of the most legendary models ever produced by the Stuttgart-based automaker. Known as the “Widowmaker”, this 911 was the first of its kind equipped with breathing apparatus. Since then, turbochargers would become a familiar sight on Porsche 911 models (bar the GT3, which still remains naturally aspirated), including the 911 Carrera GTS we’ve driven in 2021. However, the 911 models donning the “Turbo” badge would remain the pinnacle derivatives in the firm’s line-up.

Considering this, there is no doubt that the first turbocharged 911 signified a major leap forward for Porsche, not only in terms of engineering, but also in the outright performance it offered (the original 911 Turbo was the fastest car in Germany when it made its debut in 1974, no less). Now, celebrating the golden jubilee of the 911 Turbo, Porsche has revealed an exclusive 992-generation 911 Turbo celebrating the 50th anniversary of its namesake.

Based on the current 911 Turbo S, the 911 Turbo 50 Years model’s 3.7-litre, twin-turbocharged inline-six, which, coupled with a quick-shifting eight-speed dual-clutch transmission, produces peak power and torque outputs of 478 kW and 800 N.m. According to Porsche, these figures allow for a 0-100 km/h sprint time of a neck-snapping 2.7 seconds. The top speed is rated at 330 km/h.

But what sets this celebratory model apart from the standard variant? Well, for starters, it features special decals that pay tribute to the 911 RSR Turbo, McKenzie tartan trim for the seats and door panels, and many more. A Heritage Design package is also available.
