New BMW M5 Touring unveiled!

In June 2024, BMW whipped the wraps off the seventh-generation M5. Now, the German marque has unveiled the sports saloon’s much-anticipated wagon sibling. Here’s what you can expect from the new M5 Touring … and how it compares to its saloon stablemate.

As a reminder, the M Hybrid powertrain employed by the M5 siblings comprises a 430 kW/750 N.m 4.4-litre, twin-turbocharged V8 and a 145 kW/280 N.m electric motor. Combined, the plug-in hybrid configuration churns out 535 kW and 1 000 N.m of torque, transferred to all four corners via BMW’s eight-speed M Steptronic self-shifter.

According to the firm, these figures allow the (2 435 kg) saloon variant to dispatch the obligatory 0-100 km/h sprint in a claimed 3.5 seconds, while the (2 375 kg) M5 Touring accelerates to the three-figure marker from a standstill one-tenth of a second later. In the 0-200 km/h stakes, the M5 saloon, with a claimed time of 10.9 seconds, is two-tenths of a second quicker than the M5 Touring.

Stopping power is provided by a set of M Compound brakes, housed behind 20-inch fore and 21-inch rear alloy wheels. However, BMW also offers customers the option of specifying carbon-ceramic units.

Both models top out at (an electronically governed) 250 km/h, or 305 km/h when the (optional) M Driver’s package is specified. Continuing with speed, the petrol-electric set-up powering the M5 twins allows for a maximum speed of 140 km/h when travelling on electricity alone.

The M5 saloon, with a drag coefficient of 0.32, has a claimed all-electric range of up to 69 km, while the M5 Touring, which has a drag coefficient of 0.34, can travel up to 67 km in pure silence. When the 18.6 kWh battery is replenished, the M Hybrid system sips, on average, as little as 1.6 L/100 km (saloon) and 2.0 L/100 km (Touring). When the battery pack is discharged, BMW claims fuel consumption figures of 10.2 L/100 km and 10.9 L/100 km for the saloon and Touring, respectively.
