New Suzuki Swift revealed with mild-hybrid tech

Since Suzuki’s reintroduction to South Africa in 2008, we have had a soft spot for the Suzuki Swift. Do you remember the first two Suzuki products to make there way here following the firm’s four-year hiatus? It was, of course, the arguably more box-shaped Swift (it looked great, didn’t it?) and the SX4. But back to the latter; more specifically, to the latest iteration of the company’s popular hatchback — the fourth-generation Swift.

Suzuki has whipped the wraps off the box-fresh Swift. Looks good, doesn’t it? However, before we get to the exterior design, let’s see what the company has to say about what we can expect form the box-fresh model…

“In its fourth iteration, Suzuki’s iconic hatchback has evolved into a sophisticated, smart compact with a crisp design, advanced safety features, and fun-to-drive playfulness that redefines everyday mobility … The all-new model builds upon the legacy of its predecessors, offering a driving experience that is not only enjoyable but also prioritises comfort, efficiency, and safety.”

Okay, so let’s start with the exterior styling. Suzuki calls it (and the interior design, for that matter) “dramatic”. Looks are subjective, though. So we will leave it up to you to decide.

However, what we can say, is that the brand-new Swift’s nose is adorned with a fresh, piano-black grille, sited betwixt a duo of restyled headlamps, replete with L-shaped daytime-running lights (arguably of the LED variety). This lends the front end a fresh look. The taillamps, too, have been cosmetically enhanced, and features a three-dimensional design. The model seen here also features new five-spoke alloy wheels.

A total of eight exterior hues are available, including two new colours — Frontier Blue Pearl Metallic, and Cool Yellow Metallic. Four dual-tone options are also on offer.

But let’s step inside. The ergonomically designed cabin’s centre cluster and controls have been subtly positioned towards the driver. In addition, a 9.0-inch, high-definition touchscreen infotainment system (seen here) is available. The latter incorporates niceties such as Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and Bluetooth connectivity. There’s also voice recognition.

The new Swift has also been equipped with several driver assistance systems. These include adaptive cruise control, lane-keep assist and blind-spot monitoring, among many others.

So, what about the engine? Well, the current-generation model employs the carmaker’s trusted 1.2-litre four-cylinder petrol, which goes without breathing apparatus. However, the latest iteration has dropped one cylinder. Indeed, it powers the front axle via a 1.2-litre, naturally aspirated triple. However, for the new model, Suzuki has added some 12 V mild-hybrid assistance.
