New (221 kW!) VW Golf GTI Clubsport unveiled

Introduced in 1974 as the replacement for the original Beetle, Volkswagen’s “people’s car”, the “Golf” namesake has donned VWs for 50 years. Now, in celebration of the the Golf’s golden jubilee, the German marque has whipped the wraps off the new Golf GTI Clubsport, the most powerful GTI-badged model ever created by the Wolfsburg-based brand. So, let’s start there — power…

As a reminder, the standard Golf GTI, which we’ve driven on the local launch in 2021 following its long-awaited and much-anticipated introduction to South African shores, is endowed with 180 kW and 370 N.m of torque, available from 5 000 r/min and a lowly 1 600 r/min, respectively. According to VW, these figures allow the front-wheel-drive hot hatch to complete the obligatory 0-100 km/h sprint in 6.4 seconds, before topping out at 250 km/h.

However, for the eighth-generation Golf GTI-based Clubsport, the automaker has injected the standard model’s 2.0-litre, turbocharged four-pot with an additional 41 kW and 30 N.m. The result? The EA888-badged petrol unit beating below the latest Golf GTI Clubsport’s bonnet churns out 221 kW and 400 N.m. For comparison, that’s 14 kW less than its all-wheel-drive hot-hatch sibling, the Golf R, while torque output matches that of the latter.

So, how has the increases in power and torque affected performance? Well, the Golf GTI Clubsport sprints to the three-figure marker from a standstill in a claimed 5.6 seconds, eight-tenths of a second quicker than the standard Golf GTI. And the maximum speed? Well, that remains an (electronically governed) 250 km/h. However, specifying the optional Race package lifts the top speed by 17 km/h to 267 km/h.

In addition, as this is the Clubsport model, there are also several model-specific design elements to distinguish it from the standard, eighth-generation Golf GTI, the updated version of which was unwrapped earlier in 2024. In addition, customers have the option of specifying 19-inch Queenstown alloys, which evoke the Detroit items fitted to the fifth-generation model, and Warmenau forged wheels of the same size.
