In 2024, the Jeacoo brand, a subsidiary of Chery, made landfall on South African shores, with the Chinese automaker quickly gaining a foothold on the South African crossover/SUV market. The initial Jaecoo product to make its way here, the J7, recently impressed us when we had it on test; the introduction of the review reading:
“Jaecoo enters the fray with an immediately impressive offering in the J7 … [The] J7, like its brethren from Omoda – itself an offshoot of the venerable Chery brand – is more than just a pretender to the throne. It’s a statement of intent.”
With a strong intention to expand its footprint — and continue making a statement — in the South African market, Jaecoo has now announced the J5 compact crossover/SUV is heading to Mzansi, with the newcomer scheduled to arrive here in 2025.
Sporting similar, yet-on-a-smaller-scale, design language as the J7, the J5 features a prominent front grille, which is flanked by tapered headlamp arrays, and, ‘round back, a light bar, which incorporates the rear lamps, spanning the tailgate. A peek below the J5’s bodywork reveals an independent suspension setup, which, the carmaker says, contributes to the compact crossover/SUV’s “smooth” and “supple” ride quality.

Stepping inside, the J5’s cabin features a 13.2-inch, touch-enabled infotainment display, which incorporates integrated entertainment applications (a fair bet would be that Apple CarPlay and Android Auto screen mirroring will also be among these) and “smart” satellite navigation. A panoramic sunroof, measuring 1.45 m², is included in the package (model-dependent, most likely).
The J5 further features an “intelligent” climate control system, which adjusts to occupant needs in real time and alters onboard temperature “at a moment’s notice”. In addition, the air-conditioning setup has been fitted with a “powerful” air filtration system, which, Jaecoo says, can isolate pet hair to maintain “fresh” air supply to the cabin.
Speaking of pets, the J5 package includes “specially extended” seats to accommodate your four-legged companion. Other features aimed at pet owners include “specially crafted” boarding steps for smaller pets and even a pet-feeding system.
