Hyundai has whipped the covers off the Inster, a box-fresh electric vehicle (EV) with which the South Korean carmaker aims to redefine the sub-compact EV segment. As a city EV, the Inster looks promising. But just what can you expect from this newly released Hyundai? Well, let’s take a closer look…

So, just how large is this new EV? Well, Hyundai’s new city EV measures 3 825 mm in length, 1 610 mm in width, and 1 575 mm in height. To put these dimensions into perspective, the Inster is only 10 mm longer than the current Grand i10 hatchback. In addition, the width of its bodywork is 70 mm less than the latter model.

The Inster will be available in standard and long-range guises. Specified in the latter, the Inster is equipped with a 266 V electrical system comprising a 71.1 kW/147 N.m electric motor and 42 kWh battery pack, the latter of which, when fully charged, provides a range “exceeding” 300 km. According to the automaker, this variant sprints to the three-figure marker from a standstill in 11.7 seconds, before topping out at 140 km/h.

The long-range model is fitted with a 310 V electrical system, which features a 84.5 kW electric motor and 49 kWh battery. The torque figure matches that of the standard variant. With this derivative, Hyundai is targeting an electric range of 355 km. This variant has a claimed 0-100 km/h sprint time of 10.6 seconds and a top speed of 150 km/h. According to the firm, when plugged into a 120 kW DC charging station, the Inster can charge from 10 to 80 per cent in “around” 30 minutes.

“With [the] Inster, we’ve taken the small SUV image to a bold new place for the global audience,” said Simon Loasby, Senior Vice President and Head of the Hyundai Design Center. “[The] Inster punches well above its weight with distinctive design and an interior that maximises its potential in exciting, customer-centric ways. With [the] Inster we’re redefining what it means to drive a sub-compact EV.”
