DRIVEN: Toyota Fortuner 2.8 GD6 4×4

The Toyota Fortuner is possibly one of the most highly rated family SUVs in South Africa. It was a huge sales success when it first came on to the market and it continues to be a big seller for the Japanese brand. We recently spend some time behind the wheel of the 2.8 GD6 4×4 version and tackled everything from the school run, office run, shopping run and more in it.

With a cabin reminiscent of last year’s Prado and performance steeped with torque, Toyota’s mid-sized bakkie-derived SUV balances premium and pragmatism for well under budget if you thought Land Cruisers were your only option.

There are various models on offer. The iteration that we piloted houses a very capable diesel unit with the following specifications:

Spec: 2.8 litre diesel / 130kW / 450Nm
Performance: 0-100kph in 10.8sec

Creature comforts include automatic air-conditioning, cruise control, a touch-screen auto system with Bluetooth and USB functionality, electrically adjustable driver’s seat, a reverse camera and more.

Peace of mind comes in the form of a myriad of safety features including driver, passenger, knee and curtain airbags, ABD with brake assist, downhill assist control, hill assist and more.

The R617 900 starting price includes a 3yr/100000km warranty and a 5yr/90000km service plan.

Verdict: this reinvigorated 2.8 GD6 continues to impress
