The E-Class range feels underrated, perhaps overshadowed by the likes of the BMW 5 Series. But that car doesn’t have a drop-top option, which Merc absolutely does.

The E300 Cabriolet is powered by a 2.0l four-cylinder engine that produces 190kW/370Nm, mated to a 9-speed automatic transmission. After my experience with the C-Class, I expected a firmer ride but this is significantly more comfortable. I was also intimidated by the huge dimensions of what is ultimately a convertible, but once you’re on the move, the E300 feels much more athletic than I’d have wagered. Safe, opulent luxury then, the type that makes you feel just a bit… flashy. For a car that’s rear-wheel driven, I thought it would be tail happy on Magoebaskloof Pass but it handled and cornered so well – I was stunned. What should have been a five-hour trip took me six hours. I had to stop and just admire the lines of the car, its stance, those headlights and 20-inch AMG alloy wheels, gee-whiz, what a treat!

Upon entry, you are met with the MBUX infotainment system featuring a large screen that bleeds across into the digital cluster. The visuals are great to behold and easy to use – now that I’ve grown accustomed to their user interface. The materials are upmarket and great to touch, but personally, I’m not a fan of their plastics. They feel peculiar to me. They just do, and that partially detracts from the luxuriousness of the car, but don’t let that deter you. Other than that, it’s a spacious vehicle albeit a cabriolet. And I am certain small kids can fit in the back if you enjoy the hassle of moving seats around. But, for a single person like myself, it’s just perfect. Hint.

There are some downsides to the car – the cabriolet setup does compromise the boot space. My one luggage bag took up the entire boot – so imagine the problem you’d have traveling with kids. I think even if you have a family, an E300 cab should remain for those weekend outings with a significant other. And whilst the Burmeister sound system is excellent – I’m a fan of the crisper Harman Kardon setups. But again, that’s a ‘me thing’.
At just over R1.2 million, it manages to feel worth its price tag. With grace, class and opulence in spades.
