BYD Atto 2 crossover unveiled!

Chinese car manufacturer BYD (Build Your Dreams) has whipped the wraps off the Atto 2, a box-fresh compact crossover/SUV, which, the carmaker says, is tailored for urban driving. Here’s what you can expect…

The smaller sibling of the Atto 3, which is available in Mzansi, the Atto 2 measures 4 310 mm nose to tail, 1 830 mm in width, and 1 675 mm in height, with its wheelbase spanning 2 620 mm.  Compared to the Atto 3, the newcomer’s sheet metal is 145 mm shorter, front to rear, and 45 mm narrower. However, the Atto 2 is 60 mm taller than the Atto 3.

The Atto 2 is equipped with LED headlamps. ’Round back, the compact SUV’s distinctive LED aft lamps are connected by a light strip. A roof-mounted rear spoiler is also present. To enhance the car’s SUV-like styling, plastic cladding can be found on the wheel arches and below the doors. The Atto 2 is fitted with a set of alloy wheels.

As standard, the Atto 2’s bodywork is finished in ‘Climbing Grey’ paint. However, customers also have the option of specifying ‘Hiking Green’, ‘Skiing White’, and ‘Cosmos Black’ at additional cost.

Stepping inside, a large touch-enabled infotainment display dominates the dashboard. Most in-car functions, including climate control, are operated via the central screen. A digital instrument cluster is sited fore a multifunction steering wheel. In addition to these items, the Atto 3 also features a wireless smartphone charging bay. A panoramic sunroof is included in the package.

According to the Shenzhen-based brand, the “relatively” long wheelbase allows for increased cabin space. The marque claims a boot capacity of 400 litres, which can be increased to 1 340 litres for utility purposes when folding down the rear bench’s backrest.

Underpinned by the firm’s e-Platform 3.0 architecture, the Atto 2 will be available with two versions of the automaker’s ‘Blade’ battery. At launch, the standard (130 kW) model will be equipped with a 45.1 kWh unit, which, the company claims, allows for an all-electric range of 312 km. Torque remains unconfirmed, however. The second derivative, which will be introduced in the coming months, will sport a larger battery for improved range.
